Joanna Mattis, MD, PhD

Dr. Mattis completed her M.D./Ph.D at Stanford University, obtaining her Ph.D. in the laboratory of Dr. Karl Deisseroth, co-inventor of the field of optogenetics. Dr. Mattis then moved to the University of Pennsylvania for a neurology residency, where she joined the laboratory of Dr. Ethan Goldberg at CHOP. Dr. Mattis’s work in the Goldberg lab combined two-photon calcium imaging and optogenetics to uncover a profound circuit abnormality in an important mouse model of epilepsy. Dr. Mattis completed a clinical epilepsy fellowship at Penn and is now an Instructor in Penn’s Department of Neurology, supported by an NIH NINDS K08 award.
